Theatrical Thursdays
Last night Jane and I watched a fantastic film, Francois Ozon's thriller 'Swimming Pool' from 2003. It stars Charlotte Rampling, the beautiful Ludivine Sagnier, and Charles Dance. Rampling stars as Sarah Morton, a British author who is having a sort of writer's block, and wanting to expand out of her usual crime mystery genre. Her editor offers her his place in Southern France to hopefully find some inspiration for her next novel, but his daughter Julie turns up there unexpectedly and things go awry. Sarah is first very angered by Julie's presence and sexual promiscuity, but soon becomes fascinated by her and starts writing a story based on her. Their relationship becomes increasingly intense, and a murder makes it all the more complicated. A disturbing twist at the end of the movie leaves the viewer pondering over the meaning of the entire plot. I would recommend 'Swimming Pool' to people who enjoy psychological thrillers but also appreciate gradual character development rather than continuous action.
